On the Lookout in 2017

Does the seeming uptick in emerging diseases mean we are just getting better at detecting emerging diseases, or are forces like population growth and climate change making zoonotic diseases more common?

Either way, Derek Gatherer, a Lancaster University lecturer, gathered 5 little-known diseases we might want to watch out for this year. His list includes leishmaniasis, Oropouche (unsettling in part because it is spread by widely-distributed Culex mosquitoes) and Mayaro (which beat out oropouche for the “next Zika” title). Gatherer’s last pick, featuring a troubling list of presentations from pneumonia to meningitis to sepsis, already made headlines last year—can you guess what it is?
