Trump Brings Back the Gag Rule

US President Trump wasted no time reinstating the Mexico City Policy yesterday, barring US aid to NGOs abroad that share information about abortion as a family-planning option.

When the policy, known as the Global Gag Rule, is implemented, family planning services overseas drop, studies show—sometimes spurring an increase in abortion. A 2011 WHO report pointed to an increase in abortion rates in sub-Saharan Africa after the rule’s reinstatement in 2001.

The Quote: “Attempts to stop abortion through restrictive laws—or by withholding family planning aid—will never work, because they do not eliminate women’s need for abortion,” said Marjorie Newman-Williams, vice president and director of Marie Stopes International’s international operations, in a statement.
