Baby Steps

For pregnant Middle Eastern and African women seeking asylum in Germany, not speaking the language, a lack of understanding of the health care system and fear are often barriers to seeking prenatal care and other services.
With no centralized government initiative to care for them, many of these vulnerable women rely on NGOs, such as Welcome Mamas, a mentoring group that helps new mothers navigate everything from choosing a pacifier to scheduling checkups and vaccinations.
In Berlin, the city government has launched a language course that teaches pregnant women the vocabulary they need to speak with doctors.
