Model for Change

Reproductive health nonprofit Pathfinder International is boosting Burkina Faso health clinics’ ability to provide contraceptive services and health care to women. Since May, the group has helped clinics perform 30-40 IUD insertions per month and counsel new mothers on contraceptive methods. The next step is for Pathfinder to help clinics change the attitudes of husbands and in-laws, who often influence women’s health decisions toward contraceptives.
Based in part on its work in Burkina Faso, Pathfinder last month received $10 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to study how to improve women’s access to family planning around the world.
