Experts credit former sex worker Greg Owen with helping to lower HIV-positive diagnoses for gay men in London by 40% in 1 year. Owen launched IWantPrEPNow in late 2015.
The website enables people to discreetly ask questions about pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP—an antiretroviral drug regimen that has been shown to prevent HIV transmission—and order cheap, generic versions. The site’s popularity with doctors led to a gig for Owen training medical staff about PrEP.
Owen says he responds to messages from thousands of PrEP users across the world. “I know what they need, I know what will encourage them to be honest with clinicians.”
