Unintended Consequences

The science community warns of further complications with the repeal of Obamacare. Atul Gawande and others fear the potential loss of vital data if patients, scared that honesty could lead to denial of coverage without the preexisting condition clause, may not accurately report medical histories.

Researchers have benefitted from such information because it provides incomparable clues to the treatment and prevention of disease. Without Obamacare, patients may choose not to self-report health data as laws like HIPAA are not enough to protect them from denial of coverage.

More immediately, fallout is expected with the confirmation of Tom Price as health secretary. Price’s plan includes axing Medicaid expansion altogether, leaving millions of low-income Americans without coverage.
