Vanishing Act

The effort to eliminate neglected tropical diseases has become one of global health’s most inspiring success stories, writes Sue Desmond-Hellmann, CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Desmond-Hellman points to the 2012 London Declaration meeting as the start of a 5-year whirlwind of progress that has included drug donations, research collaborations, program financing and leadership by the pharmaceutical industry. The result: 20% more people have received treatments for neglected tropical diseases in the last 2 years.
More funding is needed for drug delivery and the development of new tools to battle disease, Desmond-Hellmann writes. But with continued effort and political will, victory is in sight.
