Destabilizing Development

About 1 in 5 cases of TB are now resistant to at least one major anti-TB drug and drug-resistant TB strains are packing a deadlier punch, according to a global study in The Lancet published just ahead of today’s World TB Day (theme: “Leaving No One Behind.”)

Mortality rates are around 40% for MDR tuberculosis and 60% for XDR tuberculosis.

Although there are some new drugs in the pipeline to fight TB, the countries that need them the most have very limited access. According to the Lancet report, globally 60% of TB cases worldwide are found in a half-dozen middle- and low-income countries: India, China, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan and South Africa.
