Helping Heal Uganda
Duke professor Michael Haglund is laying the groundwork for the Uganda Epilepsy Centers of Excellence with a UCB Societal Responsibility Fund grant. About 700,000 people in Uganda live with untreated epilepsy and only 4 neurologists there have the ability to treat it.
Programs for monitoring epilepsy and performing surgery to cure it do not exist in the country.
“We hope to develop the capacity to diagnose and treat — both medically and surgically — the large number of Ugandans afflicted by epilepsy,” Haglund says.
Haglund hopes to have everything up and running within 3 years in 2 full-service locations.
