State-of-the-Art Hub Sits Idle

With the cancer burden rising fast in Tanzania, Bugando Medical Centre sits ready to serve as an oncology hub for the region—yet staff and equipment shortages keep holding it back.
Tanzania has less than 5 skilled health workers per every 10,000 people, lower than the regional average of 14.1. Nestory Masalu, the only internationally trained medical oncologist in the country, helped set up the oncology ward at Bugando in Mwanza, Tanzania, in 2009.
Cancer cases skyrocketed from 230 in 2010 to 14,000 there last year, he said. But the center, limping by on borrowed and donated equipment, needs more workers and better diagnostic equipment to properly serve patients.
