Syphilis Surge

A spike in syphilis cases among newborns in Bakersfield, California, reflects rising STD rates across the nation. In particular, syphilis rates among women increased 27% in 2015 and another 21% in 2016, according to the CDC. Congenital syphilis in infants rose 6% and 4% the same years.
Experts once thought syphilis had nearly disappeared from the US. Now, some say rates could soar even more if federal lawmakers repeal the Affordable Care Act and people lose health coverage.
The CDC has urged states to address factors that put people at risk, including poverty, drugs and incarceration. For its part, Bakersfield has ramped up efforts to inform patients about STDs.
