Confirming Chagas

The CDC’s estimate that approximately 300,000 people are living in the US with Chagas—a parasitic infection that can cause life-threatening heart damage—is now backed up by a new study.
Coordinated by the Center for Excellence of Chagas Disease (CECD), the study surveyed almost 5,000 Latin American-born residents of Los Angeles County. 1.24% of those surveyed tested positive for the disease. Less than 1% of those who tested positive are being treated.
“Our study demonstrates the need for similar research in other states, and underscores the critical importance of early detection and treatment,” said CECD Director, Sheba Meymandi, MD.
