Hidden Epidemic in the Philippines

The Philippine government’s war on drugs has overshadowed another harrowing problem: increased incidence of HIV, in what the WHO calls one of the fastest growing epidemics in the world.
4 underlying factors are driving the spike, writes author Alex Adia. Filipinos are having sex at a younger age than in the past, condom use is low in the majority Catholic nation, misconceptions about HIV abound and stigma continues to isolate HIV-positive people.

To make progress against HIV, Adia says, the Philippines must commit to comprehensive initiatives, tailor its approaches to different subpopulations, and roll back the drug war.
