Countries that formally include Community Health Workers (CHWs) in health systems outperform countries where CHWs often work without a formal job description or stable paycheck, according to an editorial in the Lancet Global Health.
Citing increased health care coverage and improved health indicators in countries like Brazil and Tanzania, where health care workers are part of the formal health system, the authors say that successful CHW programs offer a clear career path and set the budget for incentives, supplies, supervision and training. Promising efforts by the WHO, and regionally, may help to formally integrate CHWs into health systems.
