Neglected tropical diseases seize the focus today as WHO brings out a new report, and global experts, donors and policymakers are convening this week on Geneva.
A decade since global partners agreed to pool resources on NTDs and 5 years since the London Declaration, the new NTD report offers encouraging news:
- 2015 saw 1 billion people treated for at least 1 NTD—nearly 2/3rds of those who needed treatment.
- From 2010 to 2015, the number of people needing treatment for NTDs has been reduced by 400 million—a marker of elimination of NTDs in an increasing number of districts and countries.
However, WHO and other organizations acknowledge how much work still needs to be done—and how much money is needed. Bill Gates, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan, pharma CEOs and others are in Geneva to announce new commitments and check in on progress.
