Double Burden

Tanzanians consider both malaria and diabetes to be severe and potentially fatal diseases, but manage the former much better than the latter, according to a new study by Tanzanian and Dutch researchers.
Researchers conducted 17 focus groups and 41 interviews with malaria and diabetes patients and relatives of diabetics to explore how Tanzanians experience the co-existence of the 2 diseases.
Respondents associated diabetes with greater emotional and economic strain because of its chronic nature and the lifelong implications—and because it increases susceptibility to infectious diseases, like malaria.
