This One's for the Boys

Duke University’s Michael Haglund envisions his leadership program for boys at a tuition-free, independent middle school in Durham, North Carolina as a pipeline for bringing diverse talent into the medical field.

The distinguished professor travels to Uganda twice a year to train neurosurgeons and perform surgery. On a recent trip, he brought along boys from a leadership program.
Observing the differences between hospitals in Uganda and the US, 8th grader Amir Britton said, “I can take what I learned in Uganda back to the US and help the community here.”
