Known as India’s Silicon Valley, Bangalore has seen explosive growth over the past several years. At the same time, climate change has nearly drained the city’s overstressed water resources.
In Wired, Samanth Subramanian reports on the “water mafia,” businesses that tap wells to fill trucks with water that is then sold, mainly to tech companies and new residential developments that house the tech workforce.
Says one member of the water mafia: “Where will the city possibly find water for all these people? In two or three years we’ll run out, and then all these apartments will be empty. They’ll have to vacate and leave.”
