Waste Not, Want Not

Iowa nonprofit SafeNetRx is leading the charge to combat medication waste by collecting leftover, unexpired prescription drugs from nursing homes and redistributing them to the many patients who can’t afford them.
While waste is not tracked nationwide, the EPA estimates that nursing homes flush or burn about 740 tons of drugs annually—a practice that likely has widespread environmental consequences.
Iowa spends $600,000 a year to fund the program, making it one of the few states promoting the redistribution of unused drugs on a large scale.
