Congo in Crisis

A government military operation launched in Congo Republic’s capital region last year has caused more than 80,000 people to flee amidst escalating violence, a joint UN and government statement reported last Friday.

Aerial bombardments have aimed to quash a rebellion by an opponent of President Denis Sassou Nguesso. The death toll has been difficult to confirm. Increased violence may interfere with the ruling party’s election outcomes next month.

The UN is requesting $20 million in emergency funding to tackle widespread malnutrition, but aid workers remain unable to reach many displaced citizens.
