US motorcyclists who love “riding free” have pushed for the right not to wear a helmet for several decades. But with evidence mounting that mandated helmet use saves lives, pro-helmet public health advocates have stopped the loosening of laws in 10 states this year and helped introduce bills requiring helmets in another 6.

Motorcycle accidents kill about 4,500 people in the US each year. The CDC says laws requiring helmet use by all motorcyclists, once the norm in nearly all states, are the best antidote.
