Lifesaving Referrals in Cameroon

Sex workers in Cameroon are persuading their clients to take free HIV tests in nearby mobile clinics. 1 in 3 Cameroonian sex workers are HIV positive, compared to 1 in 25 people in the country’s general population.

So far this year, CARE International and local partners have tested 5,000 sex-work clients. Sex workers are paid $0.85 per referral and each test takes about 15 minutes. When someone tests positive, clinicians prescribe a course of drugs and offer follow-up appointments.

CARE will present its results at the global AIDS conference in Paris next month.
