Polio Setback

An extremely rare type of polio that mutates from strains in the oral polio vaccine is circulating in Syria’s Deir-Ez-Zor Governorate.  Called cVDPV2, the strain typically appears in underimmunized populations.
“An initial risk analysis has been conducted, finding low overall population immunity levels in the area but solid levels of disease surveillance,” reports the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
The initiative is calling for all children to be vaccinated. 2 vaccine campaigns were conducted using bivalent OPV in March and April 2017, and the Syrian government has added 2 doses of inactivated polio vaccine to the routine infant immunization schedule.
