Re-Picturing Africa

For many outside Africa, the continent’s name may evoke poverty, conflict and disease. A 5-year-old viral Instagram account called Everyday Africa is challenging those notions with images of daily life in vibrant and culturally diverse African nations.

Co-founder Austin Merrill says, “The whole point is to try to rise above the stereotypes that harm the world.”

In 2014, Merrill received an Open Society Foundation grant to build a curriculum around his material and pilot it with US middle- and high-school students in New York’s South Bronx. Since then, he’s taken the program to DC, Chicago, San Francisco and Atlanta.
