Trump Nominates Next US Surgeon General

President Trump has nominated a highly respected state health commissioner and strong advocate of needle exchanges to be the next US surgeon general.

Jerome M. Adams, Indiana’s health commissioner and an anesthesiologist, worked under then-governor Mike Pence and urged using needle exchange as response to an extraordinary HIV outbreak in Scott County. The program helped stop the outbreak.

The Quote: “From everything I’ve seen, Dr. Adams is a very serious and capable physician and public health official,” said Joshua M. Sharfstein, a former FDA official and now an associate dean at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
