Upping the Risk for HIV

The American opioid epidemic puts hard-fought gains against HIV at risk, fueled by the sharing of infected needles.
Amfar hosted a conference on Capitol Hill yesterday addressing the threat, and released a new website with data on US counties most vulnerable to disease outbreaks linked to injection drug use. These “treatment deserts” could suffer further setbacks if the Affordable Care Act is repealed, says Obama’s former drug policy director Michael Botticelli: “The risk that ACA repeal will put their constituents at greater risk both for increased opioid overdose deaths and HIV/HCV outbreaks should weigh heavily on these legislators’ minds.”
