WHO's New Essentials List

The WHO is creating an Essential Diagnostics List that would function much like its well-recognized Essential Medicines List.

The list will deliver evidence-based guidance to countries so they can create their own lists of essential diagnostic tests and tools, according to WHO.

Initially, the list will likely focus in vitro diagnostics for TB, malaria, HIV and hepatitis B and C, the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society notes. The list will be expanded to antimicrobials and noncommunicable diseases. The WHO is creating a group of experts to advise on policies.

The Global Health Technologies Coalition welcomed what it called "a landmark decision."
