The Decline of the West(ern Sperm)

Sperm counts among men in western countries have more than halved in the last 40 years, according to research published in Human Reproduction Update.

Drawing on previous studies, the researchers determined that sperm concentration among these men fell from 99 million per ml in 1973 to 47.1 million per ml in 2011—a drop of just over 52%. The trend did not hold in other countries, though fewer baseline studies exist for those populations.

Lead author and epidemiologist Hagai Levine, from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said the study, which attempted to address flaws that cast doubt on previous studies, highlights a neglected public health problem.
