Ethiopia's Body Count

At least 669 people have been killed in Ethiopian protests that began in late 2015 over a proposed land reallocation, the government says. But activists believe the toll may be much higher.

To try to determine the actual death toll, Endalk Chala, a PhD student in Oregon, has been documenting protester deaths on an interactive map using reports he finds on Facebook, Twitter and blogs. His work has continued even as Ethiopia has shut down the internet at times.

“The information was all over the internet, not well organized,” he says. “I just wanted to give perspective.”
