High-Tech Swatting

In the continued fight against mosquito-borne diseases, tech companies like Microsoft and Verily are partnering with US public health officials to test new technology. Experts believe these companies bring promising innovations.

“It’s exciting when technology companies come on board,” says Anandasankar Ray of the University of California, Riverside. “Their approach to a biological challenge is to engineer a solution.”

Microsoft is testing a smart trap for mosquitoes using robotics, infrared sensors, machine learning and cloud computing to keep tabs on disease carriers. Verily is using robots to sort mosquitos by sex for a project that hopes to render the males sterile.
