Measurable Impact

Want to truly reduce your carbon footprint? According to analysis of 39 peer-reviewed papers, government reports and web-based programs, the best step you can take is to have fewer children.

By choosing to have one fewer child, an individual would reduce his or her annual carbon footprint by 58.6 metric tons, researchers found. By comparison, the second most impactful change—getting rid of a car—would reduce a person’s annual carbon footprint by 2.4 metric tons.
