As global health shifts focus from infectious diseases to noncommunicable ones like cancer and heart disease, experts believe policy adjustments, reformed health systems and effective partnerships will be key to reorienting systems to treat NCDs.
In many countries, tertiary hospitals are overwhelmed by an influx of patients who might be better served with preventive or primary medical care.
“Where we are now on NCDs is not far from where we were 20 years ago on communicable diseases,” says Isabelle Torres of Takeda Pharmaceutical Co.
Focus on building talent, providing services to the poor, and improving existing health systems, advise analysts.
