Seeing the toll of limb disabilities from land mines and accidents in Vietnam led 2 juniors at Brown and Yale universities to form Penta, an initiative that provides high-quality, low-cost prosthetics to amputees. For their work, Trang Duong and Victor Wang were named 2017 OZY Genius Award Winners.
“We want to do more than fit people with prosthetics,” says Duong. “We hope to impact people’s quality of life through our work.”
The need is great. Fewer than 10% of Vietnamese injured by leftover landmines have access to rehab services. Since 1975, mines have injured more than 66,000 and killed nearly 39,000.
