Where Are the Women?

Trying to understand the glaring lack of female representation in medical awards, Harvard associate professor Julie Silver and her collaborators analyzed awards in a range of medical societies. Published this week in the journal PM&R, their report shows 0 or near-0 representation in awards for dermatology, neurology, anesthesiology, orthopedic surgery, head and neck surgery and plastic surgery.
Silver and her colleagues offer up a 6-part call to action that includes examining diversity and inclusion data; transparent reporting; investigating issues of disproportionate representation; implementing improvement strategies; tracking progress; and publishing results to tackle the disparities.
