Lag in Immunizations

While India has been called “The Pharmacy of the World” for its manufacture of nearly 37% of WHO pre-qualified vaccines, only 65% of it population receives basic vaccination coverage.

Other countries with similar or lower per capita GDP have better rates; Brazil stands at 90% and Mexico at 88%. Today, 1 in 3 Indian children are not fully immunized, and India accounts for approximately 1/4 of global deaths from vaccine preventable diseases.

India’s vast population, geographical expanse and poor living conditions, combined with gaps in cold chain infrastructure to deliver and preserve vaccines, pose major challenges. Experts point to a need to optimize vaccine outreach and delivery.
