Lethal Lotion

Chemicals in sunscreen are destroying coral reefs, says author Peggy Orenstein in an opinion piece for the New York Times.

Among the research she cites: a 2008 Environmental Health Perspectives studyshowing that coral samples were decimated within hours of exposure to sunscreen from volunteers’ hands and a 2015 Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology report that found one chemical in particular, oxybenzone, is as ubiquitous as it is hazardous, “threatening resiliency” of the world’s reefs.

Solutions include legislation banning formulas with hazardous chemicals and using natural sunscreens or sun-protective clothing like rash guards.
