Better Bike Helmets

The bicycle helmet, a common piece of safety equipment and one of our 100 objects that shaped public health, is in need of a radical redesign.
While studies have shown that helmets can prevent severe brain injury, such as fracturing or brain bruising, they don’t do as much to protect against minor brain traumas, such as concussion.
“We need to come up with materials that don’t collapse head on, but twist and move in different directions like a second scalp,” says Roy Burek, a visiting professor at Cardiff University in Wales.
