Falling Off Course

The world is not on track to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals for health and poverty, Bill and Melinda Gates warn in a Goalkeepers report released today.

According to the report, incidences of poverty, maternal mortality, child mortality, child underdevelopment, HIV infection and tuberculosis will exceed the 2030 targets—exacerbated by the current climate of funding cuts.

One example from the report: a 10% annual drop in donor funding for HIV treatment (similar to the proposed White House cut)—could result in the deaths of an additional 5.6 million people by 2030, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.
