The Goal: Preventing Suicide

The hundreds of shoes stretched out across New Zealand signify lives lost to suicide in the country, which carries the developed world’s highest suicide rates, according to reports by the BBC and The Guardian.
 
The awareness campaign coincides with the WHO’s World Suicide Prevention Day yesterday, focused this year on the media’s role in preventing suicide through responsible coverage, according to VOA.
 
The WHO reports that that suicide takes 800,000 lives globally each year—and a whopping 78% of occur in low- and middle-income countries. Around the world, it is the second leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds.
