India's Research Gaps

India is one of the world’s largest consumers of antibiotics, but it is ill prepared for the threat of antimicrobial resistance, according to a new analysis published in the BMJ.

The authors examined PubMed studies, reports and policy documents on AMR, and patent applications. They found insufficient Indian research being conducted into how resistance develops and is identified. Nationwide surveillance is also lacking, they say.

“For research to be effective, it will be vital to strengthen coordination between different types of research and share the results within a realistic time to guide clinical decisions, interventions, and policies,” the authors write.
