Pakistan Tops 200 Million People

A new census in Pakistan counts 207.7 million people—a 57% increase since 1998, vaulting the nation over Brazil and making it the world’s 5th-most-populous country.
With 22 births per 1,000 people and less than a third of women using any form of birth control, Pakistan won’t slow its growth any time soon. The population could double by the mid-century, experts warn.
The data prompted a Dawn columnist to warn that the country’s young population (60% under 30 and more than a third illiterate) and rapid growth rate are a “disaster in the making.”
