Private Sector's Vital Role

A recent report from the Brookings Private Sector Global Health R&D Projectoutlines just how vital private investment has been to global health progress, and points to a future in which it will be even more critical.

The authors calculate the private sector spends $159.9 billion each year on overall health R&D, $5.9 billion on R&D for diseases in the developing world and only $511 million on neglected diseases. Chinese, Indian and other non-Western pharmaceutical company spending has increased in recent years, they say.

Private investment could be boosted even further, they say, by taking steps such as offering tax incentives and expediting regulatory reviews.
