Rohingya Flee Violence in Burma

Nearly 125,000 Rohingya people have poured into Bangladesh after fleeing “clearance operations” that have been conducted since last month by security forces in western Burma, according to the UN. As many as 15,000 more refugees are expected to arrive each day this week.

Concerns are rising that a major humanitarian crisis will result for the refugees and 400,000 other people in the Muslim ethnic minority trapped in conflict zones. UN agencies are being prevented from delivering food, water and medicine to the Rohingya.

Refugees have reported massacres by the armed forces, and UN officials have estimated about 1,000 people have been killed.
