The Senate Strikes Back

The US Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday rebuffed President Trump’s plan to slash funding for foreign aid and the UN, approving approved $51 billion for the State Department and related foreign programs.
The bill includes more than $6 billion for humanitarian assistance ($1 billion more than Trump requested).
STAT reports the committee also voted to overturn Trump’s limits on funding for women’s reproductive health and family planning—the Mexico City policy. However, few believe the measure will survive to become law.
The Quote: “The President sent us a budget that was irresponsible and indefensible,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt), ranking member of the subcommittee, on Thursday.
