Substance, With Style

Ever look at a well-designed billboard or poster and think, “Hey, this might save my life”?
A new exhibit at London’s Wellcome Collection explores that possibility, looking at how graphic design has shaped our health and addictions.
Curators Lucienne Roberts and Rebecca Wright, of London-based publishing house GraphicDesign&, selected more than 200 examples spanning hundreds of years. From stamps against smoking, from Zika to Ebola to breast cancer, the exhibit highlights design’s persuasive role.
Design is “misunderstood as a layer of decoration,” says Roberts. The exhibit shows it’s much more.
