Tale of Two Countries

How does abortion access compare in the US and India, 2 of the world’s largest democracies?

The countries legalized abortion within 2 years of each other, in the early 1970s. 4 decades later, the issue remains polarizing in America. Since January, the Trump administration has taken steps to limit abortion access, allowing states to deny some funding to Planned Parenthood and defunding the UN Population Fund.

Meanwhile, amendments to India’s Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act that would expand access are in the legislative process. The changes are needed soon, advocates say. Unsafe abortions account for 9% of India’s maternal deaths.
