Validation of Victory

The WHO commended Cambodia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic for eradicating trachoma, an eye disease caused by the Chlamydia trachomatisbacteria. The tropical disease is spread from person to person through contact with infected discharge and recurring infections can lead to painful scarring and blindness.

Assessments from 2014-2016 revealed that trachoma was scrubbed out in the southeast Asian countries using the WHO’s recommended SAFE strategy (Surgery for trichiasis—a complication caused by scarring, Antibiotics, Facial cleanliness, and Environmental improvements including safe water and sanitation) as part of its Alliance for Global Elimination of Trachoma by 2020.
