Malicious Messaging

Muslims in the southeast Indian state of Kerala are being targeted for anti-vaccination propaganda via social media, texts and WhatsApp messages.
The messaging falsely claims that vaccinations kill or sicken children—with specific fearmongering toward Muslims. “What this misinformation on social media is telling them is: There’s a hatred of Muslims in society, and these vaccines are a secret way to depopulate districts of Muslims,” says Shima Azeez, MD.
During a diphtheria outbreak last year, Azeez and other physicians launched Info Clinic, a Facebook page that provides factual vaccine information. Kerala launched a vaccine drive last month and is cracking down on identified sources of misinformation.
