Meaningless Suffering

There’s a term that doctors hate to hear—one that causes a room full of doctors discussing cases to go silent, writes Sanjay Gupta.
“Preventable death.”
It signifies a failure of a health system. Gupta, a physician and journalist, sees it in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. People there will die, he writes, for medicines that anyone in the US mainland could easily buy from the corner drugstore.
The Quote: “Know this. When you hear the death toll has increased from the current official number of 16, know that most every additional death need not have happened. They were preventable,” Gupta writes.
