Students Get Sick to Save Lives

After testing it on over 100 Oxford University medical students, an experimental typhoid vaccine could be part of a new norm for vaccine administration.

The only typhoid vaccine safe for infants, the drug is already widely available in India. Following the trial’s 87% success rate, its backers, the Oxford Vaccine Group and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, are now looking to the WHO for an endorsement. The trial’s results were published in last Thursday in The Lancet.

Spread through contaminated food and water, the disease takes 200,000 lives a year in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
